Linking to Strategic KPIs

Outcome Cards can be connected to Strategic KPIs to ensure alignment between team-level work and executive-level strategy.

Why this matters

Linking KPIs provides visibility into how team outcomes contribute to strategic goals. These connections allow performance to roll up into executive reporting dashboards.

Steps

  • Open the Outcome Card.
  • Navigate to the KPI or Strategic Alignment section.
  • Select Link Strategic KPI.
  • Choose the appropriate KPI from the available list.
  • Save the changes.

Once linked, progress from your Key Results contributes to the KPI’s overall performance view.

Updating the Key Results Process

Key Results define how success will be measured for an outcome.

They typically include measurable targets.

Updating Key Results

Open the Outcome Card.

Navigate to the Key Results section.

Select the Key Result you want to update.

Modify the relevant data:

KR Change Request

In some organizations, Key Results cannot be modified directly without approval. In these cases, users must submit a Key Result Change Request.

This helps maintain governance and ensures changes to strategic metrics are properly reviewed.

Submitting a Change Request

  • Open the Outcome Card.
  • Locate the Key Result you want to change.
  • Select Request Change.
  • Provide the details of the requested update.
  • Submit the request.

The request will then be routed to the appropriate approver, such as:

  • Team leadership
  • Portfolio owners
  • Company administrators

Once approved, the changes are applied to the Key Result.

Quality and Alignment Scores

Outcome Cards include Quality and Alignment scores that help evaluate how well the outcome is structured and connected to organizational strategy.

Quality Score

The Quality Score evaluates how well the outcome is defined.

Factors may include:

  • Clear and measurable Key Results
  • Defined ownership
  • Proper documentation
  • Well-structured metrics

A higher quality score indicates the outcome is well-defined and easier to track.

Alignment Score

The Alignment Score measures how well the outcome connects to higher-level strategy.

Alignment is typically based on:

  • Strategic KPI connections
  • Organizational priorities
  • Team and portfolio alignment

This ensures work being done at the team level contributes meaningfully to strategic objectives.

Summary

Outcome Cards are the core mechanism for defining and tracking strategic outcomes. By creating Outcome Cards, linking them to Strategic KPIs, updating Key Results, and managing change requests, teams can ensure their work remains aligned with organizational goals.

Quality and Alignment scores provide additional insight into how well an outcome is structured and connected to strategy, helping leaders maintain clarity and accountability across the organization.
