How to Create a Child Card from Parent Card
Purpose
The purpose of Creating Child Cards from a Parent Card is to let users build and manage work hierarchies without leaving context. This feature allows users to create child cards directly from within a parent card, ensuring faster workflows, fewer errors, and a clearer hierarchy from Initiative all the way down to Story.
Business Case
Managing large, multi-level portfolios requires speed and accuracy. Previously, users could only create child cards from Grid View, which forced them to:
Switch views
Re-locate the parent
Manually reapply shared attributes
Risk placing children in the wrong hierarchy level
This feature eliminates unnecessary clicks and context switching while ensuring every child card is created correctly, consistently, and visibly connected to its parent.
Overview
Users can now create child cards directly from inside any parent card using the Add Child action.
From a single flow, users can:
Select the appropriate child card type
Complete required fields
Automatically inherit key attributes from the parent
See the new child appear immediately across the platform
The result: faster creation, cleaner hierarchies, and a smoother user experience.
Supported Hierarchies
The Add Child flow respects hierarchy rules and only shows valid child types. For example:
Initiative → Project
Project → Deliverable
Deliverable → Story
Invalid combinations are never shown, preventing hierarchy errors before they happen.
How to Add a Child Card
Step-by-Step
Open a parent card.
Click on the Child Tab
Select Childs Cards caret
From the popup, select the preexisting child cards you want to add as a child
Select Save
That’s it no navigation required.
Add Child Dialog Behavior
Card Type Selection
Displays only valid child card types based on the parent
Add a title, start & end date, and a tag
Save
Inheritance from the Parent Card
New child cards automatically inherit key attributes from the parent, including:
Company
Portfolio / Program (if applicable)
Team
Timeframe
If the user has permission, inherited values can be edited before saving.
What Happens After You Save
Once the child card is created:
It appears immediately in:
The parent card’s Children section
Grid View, nested under the parent
Outcome Tree View (when applicable)
Search results and dashboards (subject to filters and permissions)
A confirmation toast confirms successful creation
Focus returns to the originating parent card
Weight Allocation
When a new child is added:
The parent’s total weight is evenly distributed across all child cards
Existing children are automatically rebalanced
No manual adjustment is required
Locked or Approval-Based Workflows
Child creation is allowed even if the parent is locked or requires approval
Card movement or status changes may be restricted until approval is granted
Viewing Children in Grid & List View
Grid View and List View display a caret (▸) next to parent cards
Expanding the caret reveals children at each hierarchy level
This makes it easy to explore complex structures without losing orientation
Summary
The Add Child from Parent Card feature makes building hierarchies faster, safer, and more intuitive. By keeping users in context, enforcing hierarchy rules, and automatically inheriting key attributes, it removes friction from one of the most common workflows in portfolio management.
