How to Create a Business Outcome or Project Card

Create a Card

Every initiative, project, and measurable result begins with a card.

The Create a Card feature allows you to capture strategic goals, initiatives, projects, key results, and supporting work in one centralized location. Cards provide the foundation for planning, tracking progress, assigning ownership, and measuring success across your organization.

Purpose

The purpose of the Create a Card feature is to provide a consistent way to capture, organize, and manage work throughout the Business Outcomes platform.

Whether you're creating a high-level Business Outcome or a detailed Project Card, every card becomes part of your organization's strategic hierarchy, ensuring work remains visible, measurable, and aligned with business objectives.

Business Case

Organizations need a structured way to transform ideas into measurable outcomes. Without a centralized system, work can become disconnected, making it difficult to understand ownership, monitor progress, or evaluate performance.

The Create a Card feature helps teams:

  • Capture new strategic initiatives and operational work.
  • Assign ownership and accountability.
  • Connect work to parent objectives and Key Results.
  • Organize projects into a clear hierarchy.
  • Track progress across dashboards and reports.
  • Improve collaboration and organizational visibility.

By standardizing how work is created, teams can ensure every initiative contributes toward broader business goals.

Overview

Cards are the primary work items used throughout the platform.

Depending on your organization's configuration, cards may represent:

  • Business Outcomes
  • Strategic Goals
  • Initiatives
  • Projects
  • Key Results
  • Stories
  • Milestones
  • Other custom work types

Each card serves as its own workspace where users can:

  • Update progress
  • Assign owners
  • Add descriptions
  • Attach documents
  • Record comments
  • Manage dependencies
  • Track financial information
  • Monitor performance

Once a card is created, it becomes available throughout the platform, including dashboards, hierarchy views, reports, and performance tracking.

Before You Begin

Before creating a card, ensure you:

  • Have permission to create cards within the selected workspace.
  • Know which card type you want to create.
  • Have the required information available.

Project Cards and Linked Work

Project Cards represent the execution layer of work within the platform.

A Project Card can contain multiple related work items, allowing teams to organize execution into manageable pieces.

Examples include:

  • Initiatives
  • Projects
  • Stories
  • Milestones

This hierarchy allows organizations to break large strategic objectives into smaller, measurable activities while maintaining visibility across all levels of execution.

Linking a Project Card to a Key Result

Project Cards can be linked directly to a Key Result so that project execution contributes toward measurable business outcomes.

Benefits include:

  • Alignment between strategy and execution.
  • Improved visibility into project performance.
  • Progress roll-up across dashboards and reports.
  • Better reporting on organizational objectives.

To link a Project Card:

  1. Open the card.
  2. Select the Key Results tab.
  3. Click Add Key Result.
  4. Choose Link Existing Project Card.
  5. Select the appropriate Project Card.
  6. Save your changes.

Once linked, project progress contributes to the associated Key Result and is reflected throughout the platform.

Summary

The Create a Card feature is the starting point for managing work within the Business Outcomes platform.

By creating cards, assigning ownership, organizing work into a hierarchy, and connecting projects to measurable outcomes, teams can improve collaboration, maintain visibility, and ensure execution remains aligned with organizational strategy
