Hiding Teams in the Left Navigation

Purpose

The Hide from Navigation feature allows administrators to control which teams appear in the left navigation panel. This ensures users only see relevant team levels while maintaining a clean, consistent, and fully functional hierarchy.

Business Case

Organizations often operate with multi-level team structures (Enterprise → Portfolio → Team). In previous behavior, hiding teams created several issues:

  • Hidden teams would intermittently appear/disappear on refresh
  • Child teams would not reliably display when parent teams were hidden
  • The hierarchy behaved differently across team types
  • Users had to create duplicate or placeholder layers just to maintain navigation
  • Navigation required extra clicks through unnecessary levels

This enhancement resolves these challenges by introducing predictable, consistent visibility control across all team types.

Overview

Administrators can now use a “Hide Team From Hierarchy” checkbox to hide teams independently, without breaking hierarchy or access to child teams.

What’s Improved

  • Enterprise Teams now behave the same as Portfolio Teams
  • Child teams remain accessible even when parent teams are hidden
  • Navigation is stable and does not change on refresh
  • The hierarchy displayed in Achieve Outcomes matches Manage Teams configuration
  • No need for duplicate or placeholder team layers

How the Hierarchy Behaves

1. Enterprise Team Hidden

  • The Enterprise Team will not appear in the left navigation
  • Child Portfolio and Team levels will still display (when appropriate)
  • Users can navigate directly to meaningful team levels without interruption

2. Portfolio Team Hidden

  • The Portfolio Team will not appear
  • Child teams may still appear depending on structure and visibility settings
  • Behavior remains consistent regardless of parent visibility

3. Enterprise + Portfolio Both Hidden

  • Both layers are removed from navigation
  • The platform will surface the next visible level in the hierarchy
  • No navigation dead-ends are created

4. Mixed Visibility (Common Scenario)

Example:

  • Enterprise Team → Hidden
  • Portfolio Team → Visible

Result:

  • Portfolio Team appears directly in navigation
  • No need to expose Enterprise layer

Key Behavior Rules (System Logic)

  • Hide/show behavior is consistent across Enterprise and Portfolio teams
  • Hiding a parent team does NOT block child team visibility
  • The system dynamically surfaces the next valid visible level
  • Navigation hierarchy reflects exactly what is configured in Manage Teams
  • Visibility settings are persistent across sessions and refreshes
  • No regression to existing Portfolio Team functionality

Best Practices

  • Hide Enterprise Teams when they are not needed for daily navigation
  • Keep Portfolio Teams visible if they represent meaningful grouping for users
  • Avoid over-hiding — ensure users can still logically navigate the hierarchy
  • Test visibility changes in Achieve Outcomes after saving

Common Use Cases

1. Simplifying Navigation for End Users

Hide top-level Enterprise layers so users land directly on Portfolio or Team views.

2. Removing Redundant Structures

Hide duplicate or administrative-only team layers.

3. Customizing Views by Organization

Show only the levels that matter for reporting and execution.

Important Notes

  • This feature does not delete or remove teams - it only affects visibility
  • Hidden teams are still accessible via direct links or backend configuration
  • Visibility settings apply across the platform wherever navigation is used

Summary

The Hide from Navigation checkbox provides a flexible and reliable way to manage team visibility. It ensures that navigation remains clean, consistent, and aligned with how your organization wants to structure and access teams without breaking hierarchy or requiring workarounds.
